It all started when…

In 2014, my husband Kevin and I were lying in bed, and out of nowhere he said, “I accidentally won a car.”

“What do you mean you accidentally won a car?” I asked. He stated he had been watching a car on eBay motors, placed a bid and “won it.” That became a long-standing joke...the car he “won” that he paid for. It was a beautiful 1971 British Green TR6, a replica of his very first car. I loved that car as much as he did!

Kevin could be described as a man of many talents and eclectic interests, a physician by day and always a creative soul who could do almost anything, including restore the car he “won.” It was a labor of love. We took as much pleasure cruising around and getting the “thumbs up” from people we passed, as Kevin did in restoring the car with his own hands.

In 2018 Kevin was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, and in 2022, after multiple treatments over the course of his cancer journey, his health began to fail. Although it was a very tough decision, we decided to sell the TR6. He wanted it to go to someone who could appreciate it and take excellent care of it as he had.

KEVIN ENJOYING HIS LOVINGLY RESTORED TR6

We listed the car on eBay motors, and Greg, an orthodontist from Florida and previous TR6 owner, contacted us. We communicated to Greg that the only reason we were selling was due to Kevin’s health and that we wanted to ensure the car went to a loving home. Kevin spoke with Greg and did a video visit going over every aspect of the car, proudly articulating the work he had completed. Later that day, Greg called to ask a few more questions about the car and commented on one of the pictures in the listing. It was a picture of the car with a zebra calendar to provide documentation that the photos were recent. Greg asked about the calendar and said that he had just been diagnosed with a rare cancer called neuroendocrine cancer and that zebras were the mascot for this type of cancer.

The CALENDAR AND THE CAR

We revealed to Greg that Kevin had the same type of cancer, emphasizing that every diagnosis is unique and individualized. Greg said once the zebra thing came up, he knew he was meant to have the car and bought it sight unseen. Needless to say, it felt like an instantaneous connection. Greg said it was a “God thing” that we met, and Kevin and I wholeheartedly agreed. Greg was new in his diagnosis, and we were able to make connections for him to pay forward what others had done for us when Kevin was diagnosed.

Sadly, Kevin passed away on September 11, 2022. A couple of months later, Greg suprised me with a photo of the license plate he got honoring Kevin. What an emotional moment!!

It is comforting to know that about 500 miles away from where I live, Greg is driving his beautiful TR6, planning his next trip to the Masters, and enjoying his family, especially his grandchildren. Through all of this, I've learned we are never alone in this journey, and immensely powerful friendships and connections are made that have a lasting impact on our lives. Kevin and I are so thankful that God brought Greg into our lives via a calendar and a car.

This remarkable story is told by Kevin's wife, Karen Metz, who serves on the Healing NET Board in his honor to help other NET patients receive the best care.
